Third Generation Partnership Project: 3GPPTM

3G Americas and 3GPP

3G Americas was accepted as a Market Representation Partner (MRP) of 3GPP on April 26th, 2002 at their partners' meeting in New Orleans. 3G Americas will join six other MRPs: 3G.IP, GSA, GSM Association, IPv6 Forum, Mobile Wireless Internet Forum, and the UMTS Forum, and six Organizational Partners, all Standards Development Organizations (SDOs): ARIB (Japan), CWTS (China), ETSI (Europe), T1 (United States), TTA (Korea), and TTC (Japan) in 3GPP.

3G Americas supports the mission of the 3GPP and will work with the organization, its Organizational Partners and other Market Representation Partners, to bring solid technical solutions to the marketplace providing market requirements from North, Central, and South America. The ability to contribute to the development of a consensus view of market requirements will help bring wireless success in the Americas and that success is highly dependent upon the region's continued uptake of the GSM evolution to EDGE and UMTS.

About 3GPP

3GPP was established for the preparation and maintenance of a complete set of globally applicable technical specifications for a Third Generation (3G) mobile system based on the evolved GSM core networks and the radio access technologies supported by 3GPP partners. 3GPP membership consists of three categories - Organizational Partners (which by definition are recognized Standards Development Organizations), Market Representation Partners (which are not official standards-making bodies but organizations that can offer market advice and bring a consensus view of market requirements to the 3GPP), and Individual Member companies. More than 450 companies from around the world now participate actively as Individual Members.

The partners collaborate to produce globally applicable technical specifications and reports for a 3G Mobile System based on GSM core networks and the radio access technologies that they support (i.e. Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA), Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes, and GSM radio access technologies of GPRS and EDGE.

  • Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB), Japan
  • China Wireless Telecommunication Standard (CWTS)
  • Committee T1, USA
  • European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)
  • Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), Korea
